Cultural Identity Wrap up :
In this chapter i have learned some new things. The most important thing which i have never heard before is concept of "Melting Pot" and "Salad Bowl". Melting Pot means that how people from different cultures start following the same culture on the other hand "Salad bowl" means that how people live together and follow their own what they have learned from their own countries. The best part of this chapter was a Blog poster because I have learned about so many countries and now I know little bit about those countries.

Hello everybody! My Name is Suugii, i'm from Mongolia. On my poster I tried to contain about historic subject. Chingis Khan was very popular and famous warrior and king in the world. When i say where am I from Mongolia everybody thought it's part of China but Mongolia is not. We are Independent country located between two big country Russia and China.
In my country every body respect the great history and our King. Therefore, in everywhere in Mongolia adore his pictures and statue. More over, new generation obsessed with tattoo of his picture and on our money bill his picture represented as well...

Overall, I selected some particular identities which I had been influenced by both American culture and Chinese culture. I hoped you could enjoy the trip. As we know, China is an Asia country, and American is a Northern American country, therefore, there do exist a big culture difference between these two countries. Personally, I was sensitive with music and food. Actually, I thought American culture has strong impact on me. For instance, I realized after I came here, I was more interested in hip-hop. It is really attractive, no matter its songs or dancing, I can feel enthusiasm and passion inside. Once, Jay Zhou and Leehom were my favorite singers, but now, I would like the black eyed peas and Rihanna best. In addition, I like tattoo as well, it is an amazing art. Compared with each traditional food, “Jiao Zi” can be regarded as Chinese traditional food, and “Mashed potatoes” probably represents American food. Usually, I preferred Cheesecake Factory to have a meal. In addition, I also like super sports cars so much. Possessing a Pagani Zonda has become my dream, hopefully one day, it will come true.

seokjin oh's poster

Hello everyone, my name is seokjin oh, and I made my poster for understanding korean culture. I was thinking about how could I explain my culture, could
compare with American culture, but everyone already know when we studied "melting pot" and "salad bowl". I wanted to give my culture power so I decided the poster design, wrote information. We have very strong culture for example we have protected korean culture by ourself when we lost country, and nowadays we were affected by other countries, but we must maintain the national self-respect that is korean people think.

Cultural Identity

From this class, I read some new articles. I know American’s culture is diversity. From those articles, the most interesting thing is two words. One is salad bowl, other is melting pot. At first, I can’t know what different between them, but I know it through this class. Salad bowl means different culture mix but they keep independent. Melting pot means they mix and become one culture. I never heard the two words before. When I read “I Want to Be Miss America”, I would ask myself that if I was a child, I will have the same idea as author or not. I think my answer is yes, because the situation is I was a child. Now I am an adult, so I don’t have this idea. Maybe my clothing style different with other people, I think is my charm. We should respect any culture and any different things.

China Today

As a  Chinese, I am so proud of my mother country, China. As everybody knows, China is a big counrty has 13 hundred million people live in. And even most of you can tell that Chinese people speak mandarin and maybe only cantonese(That's fault). China has a long history, no other countries would like today's China that has been through the vicissitudes of 5000 years. Dynasties ended and changed, how did people change? Today 's China is governed by Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and China is seen to spring up rapidly. It's this realy true? Let me show you some pictures I reseached from internet recently.

In the center of the poster shows there is the governor of today's China——Chairman Hu Jintao, and the military——People's Liberation Army. Our soldiers are serve nation and the people heart and soul.

People live in country or cities have different lifestyles. Things in China are complicated, the customs are different but all from traditions. Modern cultures from Westen were accepted rapidly by the youngs, but in someways they still keep up traditional spirits.

Jerry's culture identity

The salad bowl and melting pot, I think in old American, people who came to America, they try to join America secity, so that's makes America like a melting pot, it is mean everyone looks like come from different location but they try to be American, like everything come toghter, so that is mean melting pot. But now, People from different country they have different cultures, when they came to America they just keep their culture forever, it is like everybody have their own culture, It is makes American society like a salad bowl. That's is what different between melting pot and salad bowl, that's what i feeling in this unit.

Elsa's cultural identity

The cultural identity for me is that I love both American and Chinese Culture because I am going to live the rest of my life here.As a Chinese, there's a lot to do for Chinese New year. When New Year comes people would put letters on their door. There's a lot to do like Dragon dance, eat with family and others. I think American and Chinese and the common thing that they love is famous band. They would buy it and trying to show that they have good taste in something. However, I think everyone come to this country is because that they want to have to better education and high paying job in the future. They have common goal and hope their children will accomplish their goal and to be a better person

Kit's Cultural Identity Wrap-up

In this unit on cultural identity, I learned what is "melting pot" and "salad bowl". Use melting pot and salad bowl to describe cultural is very telling. I believe that America is very amazing country. In this country, everyone is same, not matter where you from, but also we can tell that everyone is different. Some people want to be in this country so they will act like a "American", but deep inside, they still have their culture's color, that was really interesting.

Kit's Poster

Hello everyone, my name is Kit. That is my poster. It's about the culture of China and the USA. In this poster, I have 2 culture of China and the USA. I think China is my home country and I'm Chinese too, but now i 'm a American, so i need to show both for my own culture. I love Chinese culture and American culture, and it make me fascinate.I want to go travel China and live in America, because it both is my home.

2nd blog assingment - Min

By studying Cultural Identity chapter, the most impressive thing is the idea of melting pot and salad bowl. Because before I came to USA, I thought this country is a country which has its own feature and I expected that I would be inside of it. But after I came here, I felt that America is like an aggregation that is composed of many features from different countries. Once I talked to a friend in my country, I told her about this. And in class, the text book was talking about it with defined words, and what teacher explained was exactly what I felt in here. So I felt good because it means I am seeing and feel America right.

I made my poster by putting Korean things on Korean map and American things on American map. I select the pictures about each country's traditional things, current popular things, and the things that can represent each country. These are food, tourist attractions, each country's own festival or holiday, sports, singer, actor, and famous company. I chose these things because by seeing them we can see the county's own features.

Cultural Identity Wrap-up

I learned what is the difference between melting pot and salad bowl in this unit on Cultural Identity. When many people who come from different countries and have their cultures come to U.S. there are always some unfair treatments, so when the offsprings of immigrants was children, they really wanted to be American, but when they grew up, they changed their mind, it's not necessary. So we should tell our friends or family to be yourself,we are the same.

Jing's Poster

Hello everyone, my name is Jing. This is my poster. It's about traditional culture of China. I love it. In this poster, my favorite picture is Yuanmingyuan Park. I am fascinated with by this picture. I can't see it in this world, so I felt more regretful. The Great Wall represents Chinese long history and culture. In China has a famous sentence is " you are not a ture man unless you climb on the Great Wall." It is a symbol of China.
I think everyone knows dumpling. It's very delicious and popular in China. I love chinese traditional culture, and it make me fascinate.I want to go back China when I was old, because it is my home.

Cultural Identity Wrap - up

In this unit on cultural identity, I learned some new ideas. The most important and interesting idea is "melting pot" and "salad bowl". Use melting pot and salad bowl to describe cultural is very telling. It helped me easy to analyze and remember the meaning. Also, I had read the article "People Like Us". When I just looked at the title, I could guess what about the article. Because in my country - China has the same parlance. It means people tend to get into a group that has values and customs like themselves.

Poster Assignment

I am a Chinese immigrate in the United States. Even though I have been here almost four years, my family and I still attach importance to Chinese culture. So I chose a lot of Chinese tradition picture on my poster. For example, the most important traditional festival of China is Chinese New Year. It is my favorite festival also. We have a lot of celebration activities in Chinese New Year. People will play the lion dance, and put red scroll on both side of a doorway. Also, the married people will give the red envelops to the people who is not marry yet. The money in red envelops means lucky. On the other hand, tea ceremony and KungFu are the special culture in China. They need many skills and experience. Tea ceremony and KungFu are from olden times, but a lot of young people are interesting on them. Also, drink tea and practice KungFu are the ways to keep healthy. Those are Chinese people familiar culture.

2nd Blog Assignment (Culture Identity Wrap- up)

In this unit on Cultural Identity, I learned about the concept of melting pot and salad bowl. I never heard about it before. Now, I understand melting pot means different cultures become one culture, and salad bowl means different cultures mix but stay independent. I chose this concept because I think it is interesting. I also learned a new idea in “They’ve Got to be Carefully Taught”. It showed us that there is an appropriate age to teach concepts such as cultural diversity. If you teach it too early or too late, there will be a bad effect on the children. So, you also have to teach melting pot and salad bowl at the right age.

TONG's Cultural Identity Wrap-up

Technically, this unit talks about cultural identities. Based on those readings which we had read, like "They've got to be Carefully Taught" and "Globalizaiton vs. Americanization", I realized that due to the United States is an extremely powerful country, its culture could spread out widely and fast. Apparently, that is why we may see so many brands or companies which also appear in other countries as well. As we all familiar with HP and Walt Disney, they are famous all over the world. However, not only the American brands are popular in the world, but also the other countries' brands, such as Nokia, the Finnish multinational communications corporation, and Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW), the German automobile manufacturing company, they are also attractive. Once some people may consider that globaliziton is just Americanization, actually, globalization is a combination of multi-cultures. Though each country has strong connection with business, technology, and culture, a singular cultural identity could not represent the entire culture identities eventually.

My Poster

My poster is about my cultural identity. First, I chose “Chinese martial arts” because it has a long history in China. I also know Americans like martial arts, especially in movies. Second, I chose “Go” and “Chinese chess” because these games are very popular with both young and old people in China. Next, I chose a picture of “calligraphy” because it shows how long Chinese history is. You can see how the word for horse started as a drawing of a horse. Now it looks totally different. I added a picture of “ink and wash painting” because it is very similar to calligraphy, and I think the pictures are very beautiful. After that, I put a picture of “qi pao” because it is still popular in China for special occasions and because I like fashion. In the middle of the poster, I put some information about myself, because I hope it can help my classmates to know more about me. I chose “Marriage” because family and marriage are very important parts of Chinese people’s lives. Since I am married, I put one of my photos on the poster. Last, since I have also been influenced by Japan and America, I added small pictures of different Japanese and American things.
